My son stepped on a game and now it has about a 2-3 inch crack from the middle goin outwards, and the middle part also has a tiny piece missing leaving it slightly jagged. I'd throw it away but it's our Futurama game which is pretty pricey of course...my question, would it hurt to try to see if it still works, or would that be dangerous to the system?

Cracked game won't work. In fact, if you'll try to run it, then the cracked disc can break inside your console while spinning and damage it.
Unfortunately, you'll have to get a new disc.

If it's cracked I wouldn't even bother with it. If it is scratched it really has no way of hurting your system. However, it if is cracked and when it spins it is unbalanced it CAN mess up the little motor that spins the DVDs causing problems, since the DVD will go up and down because the weight is not distributed. I doubt this will actually happen, but since it is cracked I really don't think its worth trying it.

It's really up to you. However, my 2 cents is that "A cracked cd/dvd should always be discarded."

It is a almost certain that it will not work, but if you want to be sure I should not hurt your system. Just be careful because the edges are sharp.
