Hi thanks for stopping by. I am thinking of adopting a 2 year old daschund. I saw him at an adoption fair and fell in love. But the only thing is I can't have an indoor dog because I have a 17 month old and another baby due in may. My 17 month ond dosen't realize that she is not supposed to sit on the cat, (which I never let her do, but have caught her trying several times). Anyhow would this dog do okay outside with a dog house and warm bed or would that be cruel because they have short coats? I live in an area that does get snow about once or twice a year and only a couple inches and it is gone within a day or two. Thanks.

My dachshund stays indoors primarily. The reason for this is simply he just likes to hang out inside. Simple as that.

Yes, dachshunds and most breeds need to be kept indoors. Personally, if I think you should wait on getting a dog/puppy. With a 17 month old and a new baby on the way you will be kept too busy to spend the time that any dog needs. I am afraid that with all the hustle and bustle of the babies and the holiday approaching the dog may be forgotten about. Dogs are pack animals and need to be part of the pack, which is indoors with their family. Even though dogs are outside with shelter, food, and water they still human contact with people. They cannot be expected to keep themselves entertained. Maybe you could look into a medium size dog. Check out newspapers and shelter boards for one that has already been in a home is great with children.

Generally speaking it is frowned upon to keep any dog as an "outside" dog. There are many reasons for this. Having a new baby is not a reason to keep dogs outside. You should never leave an animal with a child unattended so there shouldn't be a threat of the child hurting the dog and cat.
I think you need to get a crate and a game plan. Organize yourself accordingly as to how much time it will spend outside and inside. But dogs should be kept indoors with the family unit and not left outside all day in a yard as if this were a zoo exibit.

It sounds like you already have waaaay too much on your hands at the moment. How much time would you actually be able to devote to this dog?

A dog should NEVER be kept outside more than 50% of the time. That's why there are doggy doors. If you don't have a dog door & you can't keep the dog inside, then you don't need a dog, simple as that.

A dachshund is way too fragile of a dog to be kept out in the snow. If you're even thinking of trying this, expect to have a visit from the cops because I would certainly report you if I saw ANY dog trapped outside in your backyard in the snow!

Dogs are pack animals. all should either be inside or have friends and still come in at night and in bad weather. daschunds have very fragile backs and if your kid sits on her it will break her. do not get a dog until your kids are a bit older and more responsible. Sorry but that is the way it is.

They should be kept indoors. All dogs should. Doxies are small dogs with short coats though. They get cold easily. They need to have somewhere warm to live. Hold off on getting a dog until your little one understands that he has to be nice to the kitty and not use him for a chair.

Dachshunds are definitely indoor dogs - they don't like the cold and are very, very unhappy if they are not with their people.

I cannot think of any rescue that would give you a dachshund to be kept outdoors, I know my rescue absolutely requires that all our dachsies be inside family interactive dogs.

Please don't get a dachshund at this point in your life, wait until your kids are older (at least 10) and can live with a dachsie. Dachshund are not very tolerant of little kids grabbing them and pulling their ears and tails - they will snap and possibly bite - and who can blame them.

Dachshund are wonderful family dogs, but they need to be inside, socialized, and treated properly. Do not consign a dachsie to a life of misery outside - please. Wait until your situation changes.

I personally don't think any dog should stay outside Why have one if you cannot provide it with a loving family. Teach your daughter that that sitting is not an acceptable way to say I love you. And dogs are pack animals, he would be miserable outside by his self.

no, i wouldnt recomend any dog for you until the children get older, and to leave a dog out side is a shame and will never be balanced, they are social animals (not like cats) they need to be around people. plz dont get a dog your not ready.

Daschunds were originally bred to hunt badgers,
the dog is pretty hardy and tough as they come
badgers have been know to fend off grizzly bears
your giving a nice warm home. That little donut spinner
can handle it.
