I put them in the pressure cooker. No need to soak, ready for sofrito and all in 25 minutes, and they're all in one piece.

Try the "quick soak" method.

Rinse/sort beans, cover with water, and bring to a boil.

Remove from heat, soak for 1 hour.

Drain, refill with water and cook till tender along with your favorite seasonings.

Or cook without soaking; the difference between that and quick soak is the total amount of cooking time, plus the "broth" tends to be thinner with quick soak, personal preference as to how you like it.

I don't soak my beans. I just put them on to cook. Soaking them seems to make the swell more. But cooking them takes longer but for some reason they don't split as much. And soak then cook is just as long and just cooking them.

I find that because of osmosis, putting beans in pure water will make the bean swell and split... usully putting some salt in the water (if you don't want the additional salt you can always rinse them in a colander later) works for me!

You should simmer them gently and do not boil the hard. Add salt to taste.
