1 piece of raw cured ham (or Gammon smoked or unsmoked. Soaked to reduce salt if necessary)
water, for boiling
4 tablespoons oil
20-30 whole cloves
2 tablespoons clear honey
2 teaspoons coarse grain mustard
First bring a large pan of water to the boil there should be enough water to cover the ham and the pan should be big enough so that the ham does not touch the sides.
Lower the ham into the boiling water and reduce the heat to a simmer with just occasional bubbles breaking the surface (unless the ham is very salty there should be no need to skim the scum from the top).
The ham should be cooked for 15 minutes to the pound.
If you need to top up the water to keep the ham covered, use boling water.
Meanwhile preheat the oven to 200C (hot, place in it an open roasting tin lined with foil'coz the honey really bakes on) with 4 tablespoons of oil and prepare a mixture of 2 tablespoons of honey to 2 teaspoons of wholegrain mustard.
Remove the ham from the boiling pan and drain it.
Remove any skin and score the fat underneath into diamond shapes with a sharp knife.
Stud each diamond with a whole clove pushed through the fat.
Spread the honey-mustard mixture over the ham and place into the roasting tin.
Bake for 5 minutes the pound or for a maximum of half an hour, basting every 10 minutes.
Remove from the heat and leave for 10 minutes to set before carving or leave to cool before wrapping in foil or clingfilm.

Usually when u get a ham from the market it is already cooked. But of course u want to roast it before serving on Thanksgiving. A way I always loved is to diamond cut the outer skin about 1/2 inch deep. Smother the Ham with mustard and then brown sugar. Then poke whole cloves into the center of the diamonds. Preheat over to 350 and cook for 4-5 hours....then walla! delish!

Buy a spiral ham. They are already cooked so all you're really doing is heating it up and they're so good. You usually put it cut side down in a pan with about an inch or so of water and then bake it for two hours or so, depending on weight.

ROAST FRESH HAM
Printed from COOKS.COM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 fresh ham
1 clove garlic, cut up (or garlic powder)
Salt & pepper
4 sliced onions
2 sliced carrots
2 stalks celery, cut in pieces
Caraway seeds (opt.)
1 bay leaf
1 c. water
1 c. dry wine
3 whole cloves
Score ham. Rub garlic, salt and pepper on all sides well. Put onions, carrots, celery, bay leaf and cloves on bottom of pan. Add water. Lay ham, skin side down, on vegetables.
Roast uncovered at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Baste frequently with pan juice and wine. Turn meat skin side up and roast until done.
Roasting time is about 4 1/2 hours for a 5 pound ham, from the time the meat is put in the oven. Roasting time is 25 minutes per pound, or roast to 185 degrees on a meat thermometer. Baste often with pan juices and wine. Serve with gravy or with raisin sauce made with pan juices.

Amanda is right. Most spiral hams at your grocery store are already cooked and they come with a glaze packet. Just follow the directions on the little packet and cook on low temp for a couple of hours. These hams are delicious... I've used them several times.
