I have one female cat-10 years old and 1 male kitten 8 months old. I have a litter tray for each which they do both use but there are times when they will just choose to use the bed, even when the litter tray has been recently changed, they'll use it that day, but the next day they may go on the bed instead. help!?

had the 8month old be nutuered/spayed that might help things but it sounds like they are fighting for territory, has the older cat always been on its own? has it always been allowed on the bed? when they do mess your bed, rub their faces in it and then put them in the litter tray, also try getting a lemon spray of some kind, it should put them off, sorry if it doesnt help

Sometimes cats do this when they are unhappy about something. When my roommate moved into a new apt with her cat, the cat would pee on her clothes allll the time. It was really annoying. Until she sent the cat back to her original home with her parents the cat was happy again. I guess cats don't like dramatic changes, like a new kitty perhaps? Closing the door to your bedroom might be a good idea but she might choose another spot anyway.

Do they both have their tray in their own separate room or area? Are you constantly moving their trays around?

I noticed this with my cats, after they first went to the toilet on the quilt they seemed to think that it was the natural place to go. We have 2 cats and 2 cat litter trays so in the first instance we kept the door closed, then after a while let them back i. Now they only go in the tray.

Sounds like they are marking their home terratory, at any age if they feel threatened they will spray more, could be that their outside terratory is being challenged. Give them lots of attention, make sure they have no challenges in the house ie other pets, kids, people they're afraid of. Just give them plenty of space and reassurance.
The smell can be controlled by bicarbonate os soda, either mix it in a spray bottle or tip on. Failing this you could try a product called Feliway plug-in's and sprays. Feliway plug-in puts out a calming scent for the cat that is like their natural pheromones. The human nose will not be able to smell anything but it does wonders to calm the cat and stop it feeling the need to mark it's territory (spray). Good Luck

Sometimes cats messing in areas they shouldnt is a sign of stress.. I dont know your situation but maybe you should move the litter boxes to a different area? Are they both fixed if so i know that walmart has a spray which disgust animals so maybe try it... I dont know the name but im sure someone at the store could help you... I also know that cats hate the smell of anything citrus so maybe spray a citrusy room spray on the bed ... Good Luck!

Does anyone sleep in the bed besides you?? Do the cats both try to sleep in the bed? We had a cat taht did this when somone new was introduced sleeping on the bed. It was marking it's territory..to say. Best to kick them both off the bed/out of the bedroom until they get over thier jealousy.

sounds like the younger male kitten has reached sexual maturity and both cats are reacting to it. the older cat may feel threatened by the male and the male may just be trying to leave his mark on the bed .. older cat therefore responds.

two solutions .get the male neutered

shut the bedroom doors.

Keep the bedroom doors closed and put the cats out at night

To stop them Pxxxxx in the Bedroom -put them in the kitchen.
It is so easy, when you know.

It is the same as one of Fanny Craddocks recipes. "Separate two eggs - put one in the kitchen and one in the lounge".
