If your asking, then obviously you haven't found a value for the tropical forests of the world. Here are some you may consider, take it or leave it.
-Adds oxygen to the atmosphere.
-Hold cures to diseases discovered and yet to be discovered.
-Home to countlesss creatures discovered and yet to be discovered.
-Filters a large portion of the worlds fresh water (Water cycle).
-Home for many humans.
-Home to countles plants, trees, etc... that can live no where else.
-A place for adventure and exploration.
-A place to photograph.
-A place to learn.
-Gods creation.
-Combats the ever increasing Co2 emissions by humans.
-Many creatures that live there keep others in check (thus preventing widespread new diseases, old diseases, plagues, so on and so forth.)
These are just a few.
Humans are stewards of the Earth meaning we have the capability of destroying it or taking care of it. The tropical forests need humans just as much as we need them.

After reading this ? and the answer provided by another reader, it has occurred to me that there is an obvious lack of general knowledge out there. Mind you not yours(your ? is fair). The reason to protect the tropical forest is simple at best. See the rain forest produce over 70% of our breathable air. Also they support over 2/3 of our know vegatation and approximately 65% of known species live within them. In addition there are noted effects to our climate do to the deforestation of said forest. These effects include global warming(the big one), the loss of 20-25 species annnually(Not including the 75%of unknown species), the loss of natural water purifiers(these are the planet's natural defense against pollution). Now ,I could go on forever with plenty of reasons to back this information up. However ,I feel that it is in your best interest(and the rest of the world's too) to read several books and to watch certain movies. I hope this information wakes someone up and they realize we are the only ones who can make a change. Before it's to late....

Yeah, not to mention he referenced Fern Gully as one of his sources. It's a cartoon, for goodness sake!
Burning rainforest for agricultural land is a bit like shooting yourself in the foot; the soil is poor and only tends to support agriculture for a limited time. We've managed to harvest some rather useful pharmaceuticals from these rainforests (that alone is a good reason!) such as quinine and curare. Forests can protect neighboring areas from flood and drought as well.
I'll agree with Dr Jello that old growth forests don't take as much CO2 out of the air as newer, growing forests, but I also think there are many other considerations above simply that as reasons to protect tropical rainforest.

There aren't that many tropical rain forests out there. Plus, if we don't save the forest, we are also killing many species of animals. Don't you want you children and grandchildren to know about the animals that live there? If they die, they are not coming back! Lets save those animals so future generations will be more educated!

Uriah claims to be knowledgeable yet he sites an obvious hoax, that jungles are the lungs of the earth. It is simply not true. It sounds nice and it gets repeated often but it has been proved false.
If you don't believe me, dissect what he says. 70% of our breathable air comes from the tropical forests. What does that mean. 70% of oxygen. Clearly that is not true. It is nonsense and meaningless.
Modern environmentalism, like most religions, is more about faith, than actual facts.

We don't. Growing trees remove more co2 from the air than mature trees. Harvesting old growth forests helps reduce the amount of co2 that is in the air.
