The Church takes marriage very seriously and never likes to assume anything.
All previous marriages, civil or religious, have to be dealt with before someone can be married in the Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church believes that God does not recognize civil divorces.
Jesus said, "Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." (Mark 10:9)
However there may be hope of a declaration of nullity.
The term "annulment" is a misnomer because the Church does not undo or erase a marriage bond.
Rather the Church issues a declaration of nullity when it discovers that the parties were not truly joined by God and hence a full spiritual sacramental marriage as understood by the Church was not present.
Then the parties are free to marry for the first time.
With love in Christ.

Hello,
Because the church is bound by state and provincial laws to have the civil part of the marriage whether it likes it or not.
All religions must include the civil part and documents when marrying. A priest, minister or rabbi or mullah has the same license as a Justice Of The peace to do marriages..
After before an annulment was granted to my wife in order to marry again in the Catholic church she had to present her civil divorce papers before proceedings could begin. Also God's blessings for the catholic ceremony do not cover the legal responsibilities entwined with the civil union.
Cheers,
Michael Kelly

Catholic Church defines marriage as between a man and a woman. Marriage is a sacrament in the Catholic Church. It recognizes marriages performed in Most Protestant churches. The church does not recognize marriages performed by civil officials. Gay marriages also have another sin. Homosexuality is forbidden by the church and most non-catholic institutions also. There fore gay marriage would be wrong. If something is wrong you are not supposed to approve or even tolerate it.

Because it's not really a marriage if it's secular. People who think a civil proceeding can possibly function on the same level as a Holy Sacrament are misleading themselves, and others.
The Holy Sacrament of Marriage is binding in the eyes of God. A civil union, a mere legal (not spiritual) proceeding does not constitute a "marriage" in the eyes of God.
While political law recognizes civil unions, don't assume this means God approves of them.
In places such as Massachusetts, there is such a thing as same-sex civil unions. They like to call them "marraiges" but they are not on account of the fact justices are bestowed a different "power" than the Church is.
When dealing with issues concerning morality, it would be wise to consider the Church's take on things BEFORE considering politics.

It's scary when you once had significant control over the world and that world now moves on and changes without your say-so.

Its called "Exercising power for the sake of exercising power, not to accomplish anything, but rather just to flex muscles and remind the world who they are."

My protestant friend is marrying a Catholic man next month, and she had to produce proof of her baptism and meet with a bishop to prove that she's legit or something. It's very odd.
