I run a daycare, my rates are lower than others and I only ask that I be paid on the 14th and the 31st. A lady I babysit for moved and the company her husband worked for mailed his check to their old house so they haven't received it yet. They have to go to check in advance (or something like that) to pay me today. The 14th is crucial because our truck payment is automatically deducted on the 15th. I want to tell them not to worry about it but I can't, it's the reason I set the payday the way it is. I think she wanted me to say not to worry but I honestly can't do that, my pay days are just as important as anyone else's right?

Yes, I still babysit for her, she just moved to a new house, we have become friends and I just feel bad, I really wish I could tell her to wait til she gets her check but I can't :(

OMG! 3 of the ladies I babysit for had to go to the same place to get an advance just to pay me, they all work together. Should I rethink my pay-days? This is too weird!

First of all don't feel bad. No one feels bad for expecting their boss to pay them and likewise, you shouldn't feel bad because you are expecting payment for services.
Consider charging parents on Monday for the week in advance. This way, the expenses won't build too high and you will be paid for your service ahead of time!
Refer your parents who are struggling to pay to the local agency in your area that provides child care subsidies. There is help for parents who are struggling paying for child care.
Raise your rates by $5-10 per week yearly. Don't get children in your daycare because your "rates are lower than others". Get them in because you provide an invaluable service.
Whatever you do, don't apologize. Don't allow yourself to be overcome with guilt. You are running a business. You deserve to get paid.

You run a business, and you should be paid like anyone else. Do you still sit for her? If not, maybe she is just giving you a run around?? I know it sucks, but don't let emotion get in the way. You have your own life and your own bills. You need to be paid. You give them a service and they need to keep their end of it. If they can't then they need to know that their childs spot will be filled in by someone that will pay.
On the other side of it though. It is tough when you don't get your check the day that you are supposed to. We've had that happen before, and everything gets thrown off. My advice to you would be to somehow change the paydays to like the 10th and the 25th. we had to change our stuff in order to make sure we wouldn't be late if something like that every happened again.

Why on earth do you feel bad? You provide a very valuable service, and you deserve to be paid just like everyone else! You are not independently wealthy, and I'm sure every dollar counts. You did the right thing! Sometimes life doesn't work out the way someone expects it to, so if they have to go to check advance, then let them! Best of luck to you!

Your paydays are more important that anyone else's because you are caring for their children! I used to make sure my daycare provider got paid even before my mortgage, back in the days when I had to juggle. If these people leave you and find other daycare just because you insist on being paid on time, then you'll be open to find better clients.

You run a business. You business requires you to be personally involved with the customers so you develop a bond with them.
Do not let this bond influence your business decisions. You made them for a reason and that reason is still there. They need to respect that.

Yes it is important. It sounds like your emotions are involved. I would just be professional and businesslike about it and (without emotion) let her know you expect payment on the 14th. You have your expenses too.

If you make one exception, you are going to have to make more in the future. Stick to your guns on this one.
