I've had that fondue cheese that is too alcoholic tasting, and if you're not used to it, it can be a bit much. The wine taste is still good if it is very light, so you can always 'thin out' the strong cheese with another creamier, soft cheese such as brie or cream cheese. This was a solution I had to a much stronger 'fondue blend cheese' I bought at the grocery.

You can also use a processed cheese, but then you lose the authentic cheese flavor which is kind of the whole point of fondue. I found that brie melted easily and mixed well with the store-bought fondue cheese, and the alcohol flavor was much more mild and pleasant.

Real Swiss fondue has white wine & Kirsch, a cherry liqueur.
Just make a cheese sauce with Velveeta or American cheese.
Start with heating some butter, add 2 tbsp flour, make a roux.
Slowly add 1 cup of milk, heat until it bubbles around edges.
Add your grated cheeses & stir until melted.
Transfer to fondue warmer & serve with crusty bread.
