The Lord's prayer?
The Psalms?
Any Scripture verses at all?

Or are we supposed to be completely spontaneous, on the assumption that God wants our words of worship and not His own words offered back to Him?

And, of course ... can anyone offer Scriptural support one way or the other?

I can't speak for God but from my experiences, He loves all praise, even from or especially from the Bible. And praise is automatically defined as a positive thing anyway. So you can't go wrong however you praise Him b/c all praise is good. In my opinion it is definitely NOT WRONG to use scripture in praise. The Bible says that it is like music or a sweet sound to His ears when we praise Him. It's a beautiful thing.

Any praise of God is appropriate. And although the Lord's Prayer, the Psalms, and anything from the Bible or other scripture are valid sources when it's for the sake of praising God, these sources are scripture, and too often confused with "God's Word" -- The Word of God -- Jesus.

So I see two questions in your post here --
is it appropriate to praise from scriptures? (Scriptures being writing inspired by God)
-Answer -- Yes if you are talking about praising God. All praise of God is appropriate and God will work it out to be right (That's in Thessalonians somewhere - God works all things to good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose....)

Is it appropriate to praise from God's Word?
-Answer -- God's Word is Jesus - God incarnate. To praise from Him is to praise from the position of the bride through the bridegroom -- again -- Yes, very appropriate.

So either way you look at this, it's a YES! (Imagine that :) )

Since those seem to babble on I would say you are supposed to offer up your own and give you Mat 6:7-8

then again if you read on it tells you exactly the opposite. (The lords prayer is the next few verses) So do your own, keep it short and then the lords prayer.

Then 6:14 says to be forgiving or you will not be forgiven ( I had to go make sure I was in the right part there), by your name you aren't a fundie so that shouldn't be too difficult.

I don't think its an either or situation.

I think both of them are necessary. The bible (and the church) gives us God's revelation, without them any knowledge we have of the Christian God would be incomplete. If we praise God for being the Way the Truth and the Life, it is because that has been revealed to us. In the depths of our being we thirst for the Way the Truth and the Life. We are the seekers, God is the sought after, the bible (and the church) are like maps keeping us on track. All of these things are necessary. We cry out (personally) to the God that has been revealed to us.

First off, the Lords prayer is Jesus explaining to his disciples how to pray. He said when you pray SAY...But that prayer is not appropriate today exactly as it was prayed then because (God's Kingdom has come) Jesus, asked of the Father " may your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. The Holy Spirit is here, the body of Christ is here. God's way is on earth...
What is said in the Psalm apply to Christian today so yes, you may confess those words and apply them to yourself. If you read Psalm 91: 1 through 16 you will see that there are three persons talking there. verses 1 and 2 is David, then Jesus, comes in at verse 3, then God the Father comes in at verse 14.... I too will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress" That's true of all Christians. So of course you may confess that, and you may also pray from your heart in your on words.

It is more than appropriate!
Jesus used The Words of God against the devil when he was tempted by him! He said: "It Is Written"!
The Bible describes Thw Words of God as The Sword against all evil! How do we make a sword of it? By using and confessing everyrthing that is written!
God's Words show God's Promises to us, as we are His through Jesus! We are more than allowed to pray claiming the promises, like Jesus did: "It is written" Faith pleases God" If you use His Words as base of your praying He will be pleased!
But there are several ways of praying! we can simply adore God! This is praying too!
