my friend got pulled over about a month ago for doing 90 in a 50 mph zone. They gave him a court date which was today. He went to court and he told me that they charged him with a 600.00 fine as well as a 30 day jail sentence. He said (which I don't believe) he apealed the decision so they let him go and he has to return to court January 9th with a lawyer. Have you ever heard of something so obscene? I know I've never in my life heard of garbage like this. He does tell lies every now and then so it's not unusual. bUT it's to my understanding that if you get locked up and they put handcuffs on you as he said in court and then let you go. Come on now have you ever heard of anything like this?

the thing that makes this so unbelievable is the part where he says that put the handcuffs on him...come on now if they put them on him wouldn't they have put his lying a** in jail...they don't put handcuffs on you then let you appeal the decison while in court...let's be serious

It depends where he got pulled over ..and if he was going 90 in a 50 mph zone it could be up too 600 because the rates go up for example if you go 60 int a 50 mph zone it could b $300 and if you go 70 in a 50 mph zone it could b $400 plus even more near a school zone!! so yeah it could happened but the jail time sounds obscene..

Most likely he got charged with something else that he did not mention. There is no criminal statute for speeding that involves jail time. What might have happened is in addition to the speeding ticket he got tagged with reckless endangerment or something along those lines, which if he was speeding that fast through something like a school zone during the day would not be out of the question.
To clarify, what happened when he was locked up and then released meant that he was not remanded to prison custody, but wither made bail/bond or was simply allowed to go home and return for his trial.
There is something missing in this that someone is not saying.

It could happen like that. When you got to court for a speeding ticket you have a chance to appeal, and if it can't be settled that day they could get a new court date. He might not have been sentenced to that though... they may have told him that a guilty plea could receive that and he chose to plead not guilty and then would need a new court date.
There are times people get thier sentence and then are told to report to jail and not taken right that second.

You do know that if you are driving in excess of 30 miles over the speed limit, you can be arrested and thrown directly in jail, right? The fact that they let him drive away for going 40 over the speed limit is somewhat amazingly nice of the police officer.
The sentence seems in order, I imagine he has several speeding tickets or citations / arrests in order to get such a heavy punishment. He can appeal the decision, in which case he gets a later court date, it does sound right.
Maybe he'll stop speeding now, that really is quite fast, doing 90 in a 50.

Makes sense to me. In most states anything 25mph over the limit will get you arrested on the spot. Probably lying about something but the fine and sentence make sense

90 In a 50 I would have arrested him on the spot. reckless driving. you do not get let go simply becuase you want to appeal. Maybe the judge sentenced him to 30 days and suspended the jail term.

Laws have changed now, if you are caught doing more than 20 over the speed limit they can now LEGALLY... impound your car, give you a fine and give you a jail sentence... this is to stop street racers and inconsiderate people from driving like maniacs and killing the innocent.
this is in Canada... I'm not so sure about the states.. cause they can make up their own laws and get them passed judicially.

I never have heard of this before. However, if your boyfriend has been in trouble before then that could explain the hefty fine and jail sentence. In regards to be hand cuffed and all that and then being let go, sounds strange to me.

That was the courts offer if he plead guilty. He obviously is pleading not guilty, and requesting a trial. That's why he has a new court date, and told to come back with an attorney.

Have heard of this. In most states, anything 30 mph or more over the speed limit is considered Felony Speeding, and/or wreckless endangerment, punishable by fines, incarceration, or both.
