I am looking to visit another country for the first time in my life. I would like to find a nice tropical location with interesting culture. I would also like to be able to stretch the american dollar as far as possible, I will be working with a very modest budget. Any info from experienced travellers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There are a number of different things to consider here. First there is the cost of living (hotel, food, attractions) in an area. In this area you'll probably find that somewhere in the Pacific is the cheapest. But another is the cost to get there, likely the biggest cost you'll have to bear. Tahiti might have some bargains once you get there, but getting there can be very expensive.

The Dominican Republic is a real possibility - they have a fairly inexpensive cost of living, and some low end hotels, plus the cost of flying there can be inexpensive, since Spirit Air flies there daily.

Another possibiility is Puerto Rico. While not another country, if you get out of San Juan you can get some inexpesive life with some interesting locals, and again Spirit is flying there fairly inexpensively.

The Caribbean coast of mexico is another possibility - there is, I think, a youth hostel in Cancun, and the cabana hotels in Tulum are legendary, but if you get off the beaten track you can find yourself in a very interesting and inexpensive location. The Mayan sites and wonderful natural beauty are another plus for this area.

Aruba's a cool place. Great climate. Out of the hurricane belt. It looks like Arizona, but with beaches of white sand and crystal clear blue water. They have virtually no unemployment (which means you don't have people coming up to you on the street begging for money), and barring the Natalie Holloway thing, they have had little bad publicity.

Try Trinidad & Tobago.

You can get a really nice discounted flight roundtrip, it is really tropical, friendly and wonderful, and it is typically six T&T dollars to one US dollar, with a fine value for your buck.
