Boker and JD are gonna give me hell for this one but here goes.....
The state of Georgia allows hunting of wild pigs during small game animal season. MANY hunters are in the North Georgia woods hunting very LARGE wild boar with the 22 mag rifle as the state says that is the largest rimfire round you can use during small game.
That having been said, I have seen fellow hunters CONSISTANTLY take 300+ pound boars with a 22 mag rifle. Most of them on the first shot! This wasn't a fluke nor chance encounter. It happens all the time.
Do I recommend this? HELL NO!
But people do it all the time...

im sure that most states require a center fire to hunt big game ,deer, bear etc so legally you can hunt up to coyotes wit a 22 mag .that said if the world turned to crap and i could only grab one rifle ,and only one rifle it would be a 22 mag.it will take a whitetail if shots are under 50 yards and bullet is put i n the head or through the boiler room .if shot in vitals they wont go 50 yards dont care what they say im sure ill catch hell but ive seen it happen several times with the same result i dont recomend this but the ?was what is the largest animal it would take

Boker Magnum is 100% correct. The 22 Magnum is a small game and Varmint round, and it will work great on Coyotes or anything "smaller".......As Boker already also advised it wasn't designed to be used as a big game cartridge.
Good advice. To others who will tell you different..You can kill ANY animal with ANY firearm, but that doesn't mean that it's etical, practical or good judgement to shoot an animal other than those the bullet was designed for except in extreme emergencies.. Different calibers were designed for different applications and different game....

I'm sure that you can kill a deer size animal with a .22 mag. if you happen to hit them in just the right place but it is not sufficiently reliable for this size game and it is not recommended. In fact, it is a prohibited deer hunting round in most, if not all, states. The largest that I might shoot with it might be something like a ground hog or a fox. It would likely not be sufficiently relliable on a coyote or other game of that or larger size. it is best on squirrels, rabbits and game of that size.

Nothing larger than Fox.* Coyotes need a 22 Hornet, 218 Bee, 222, 22-250 would be the best & humane for them.*

Coyote sized and no larger, and only then at 100 yards or less. Anything larger you cannot ensure a proper, humane kill. Ethical hunters would never attempt to shoot larger game with a 22mag simply because it's not designed to take larger game, it's a varmint round, to be used on varmints.

My experience is YES you can take an animal up to deer size with a 22 mag. I just shoot them in the head.
What is it with these people on here? How the hell is shooting a deer in the head unethical?
And to think about all of the "Years of Experience" you idiots post on here and you don't know SH*t!

Boker is right. It is a varmint gun. the difference in bullet its that .223 and smaller are made to fragment. Larger cal. bullets are made to mushroom and have a deeper penetration. Even though a .223 has a muzzle velocity 3100 fps the bullet is not heavy enough to penetrate tough skin and bone. Although you kill a dear on the spot with a .22cal with a shot behind the ear I would not advise it. The largest animal that should be shot with a .22cal is a coyote.
Although I hog hunt with M4A4 5.56mm (.223) I reload my own ammo and have very much experience in it. I have killed hogs weighing up to 500lbs but they wear not a "one shot one kill." It is hair raising at times and had to find a tree to get in fast! I even hat to kill one in close combat with my mounted bayonet. That was ride I'll never forget.
So again, a coyote!!!!!!!!!!

Me personaly I would not shoot anything over the size of a fox at a max range of 100 yards. If you want to shoot yotes use a centerfire.
