Sometimes it seems like I can't put down the guitar for days at a time....other times two weeks can go by without me picking up the guitar. I stopped taking lessons at 18 (after 8 years of lessons), so I only really play when I want to. Do you practice daily or are you like me and do you go through periods in your life where you don't play like me?
Actually I notice the periods when I don't play is when things are going really well...its when I'm feeling down that I can escape into the guitarworld.
I know all players are different I just want to know if other people are like me.

btw I'm talking about casual (non-pro) players...I haven't been in a band since High School, so I don't have a reason to practice regularly....although I am thinking of putting out an ad in craigslist for people to jam with so I have a reason to play.

I dig where you're coming from. I definitely know the feeling.
After 10 - 12 hours at work, it's hard to get motivated to do anything nowadays during the week. I'm working on my house, restoring a '65 Mustang, and then all the usual stuff like laundry and shopping.
But the funny thing is once I get around to playing it seems like hours go by and I hardly notice. My neighbor once asked how pieces did I know because I guess one Sunday I played from lunch to sunset.

When I was in my professional years I played every day and night while learning and rehearsing the songs I'd sing. For the first four years at playing, I never missed a day except for the time I wrecked a friend's car in Tennessee and had to leave my guitar at a farmer's house. It took a whole month to get the guitar returned to me.
Now, I play sporadically; not every day. When teaching, I try to keep my calluses toughened and my flexibility on the fretboard limber and quick. But there are days that go by without my picking up one of the guitars.
Right now, I've pulled out my electric Gretsch and am playing it after months of playing only my acoustics. It's still sweet and smooth.
So your experiences are normal for most guitar pickers.

I play daily, there was a time when I would get off work and practice all night long. Now I play at least a couple hrs. daily. And yes, some days I'll pick it up and think,"wow, I'm getting pretty good on this thing" then maybe the next wonder why I even bother it sounds so crappy.

Interest comes and goes for me, too. Started at 10, played every day for 10 years, stopped for a few years, then begain playing guitar for a living. I had to practice several hours each day to stay in shape. I quit that when my son was born.
These days, I pick it up only when I'm in the mood. So much competes for attention, it's only an amusement now.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I play regularly in a pub session once a week, and in church most Sundays, but i don't play every day.
