When you are in Word 2007 you need to save the files as Old Word Doc files. there is an option to save them as the old files. (just make sure you always save them that way).

For your files, just do a SAVE as. then find the older file type in the drop down.

Subtract 4, i.e. 2007 - 4 = 2003
