"The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, their deeds are vile, there is no one who does good"

... and why would anyone want to associate themselves with such a religion?

A hate filled ignorant religion would hold such narrow minded views, in my opinion.

That would be at least three major religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, each of whom believe the Old Testament writings to be divinely inspired.

Check out http://www.bible.org/netbible/ and look all of Psalms Ch. 14 in context. God is describing the actions of fools, but the chapter as a whole is speaking to the inability of the human race to follow God without sin. I'm a Christian because I realize that I have sinned against God often (once is all it takes), so I need his forgiveness.

It is a verse from Psalm 14:1 of the Holy Bible. Why would I have a problem associating with a religion that makes this statement? You are offended because you do not believe in God and do not like being called a fool. You feel that you are a good person and you don';t deserve to be talked about in this way. I assure you that you have done vile, contemptable things in your lifetime, even if it is not your usual behavior. I can also assure you that the good things that you think you have done are not as great as you would make them out to be.

"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good."

Because I acknowledge that I am not greater than the creator. I am corrupt, my deeds are vile, and I do not do good. I am not superior, I have the same opportunity for salvation as the next sinner.

Psalm 14:1, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no-one who does good.”

Psalm 53:1 then adds, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good.”

Do the two passages sound similar? They are. Psalms 14 and 53 are almost exalt duplicates. Then too, the Apostle Paul quotes quite a bit from these two Psalms in Romans 3.

I wonder why all the answers here are so quick to land on Christianity. This is Psalm 14:1 from the JEWISH torah (also known as the old testament)

Actually, you'll find that quote in the OLD Testament. Judaism was a very parochial faith and looked askance at anyone NOT Hebrew. At that time, so did every other tribe or group.

Big Deal!

Judaism and Christianity.

And what it says to me is that there is no one that has done good. Everyone has done SOMETHING evil throughout the course of their life.

Christianity. It is an acknowledgment that we are not greater than God. It is from Proverbs. You should read more, there is plenty of wisdom there.
