Teeth #s are 1-32, starting from the upper right across the upper left, down left to ending with the lower right. Abrasion usually means toothbrush abrassion by the gum-line on #7. #7 is your right lateral incisor. #8 central incisor is missing.
A root canal is when the Dentist or Endodontist removes the nerve of the tooth.

the numbers are your teeth! most people are born with 32 teeth. the mouth is split into quadrants so to chart what you have in your mouth and what you need the dentist will say 'upper left 1,2 ,3, etc (1 being front tooth and 8 being wisdom tooth.) he will do this for all 4 quadrants. 8 would be absent because you've either had it removed, its not grown through the gum yet (erupted) or you just didn't make any wisdom teeth. Abrasion is wear of teeth. root canal treatment is basically a filling that goes right down into the roots of the tooth (in VERY simple terms). Anything else?

He is counting the teeth and commenting on their health to the nurse. Not sure what an abresion is, but I'm guessing that you are missing tooth number 8.

A root canal is simply a filling down into the root of the tooth. It takes longer than a regular filling and is usually done by an Endodontist. Sounds much worse than it is, except that it costs a lot if you don't get it done on the NHS.

The dentist was counting your teeth and saying if there was anything wrong with any of them, 8 absent means your 8th tooth is missing.

But I don't know about root canals

the numbers indicate the tooth in question and the gum around it, a root canal is when a dentist drills in to the tooth to kill the nerve

I agree with MK, except for one thing:

If the dentist was using the Palmer Method, and not the Universal Method of tooth numbering, then #8 would represent your wisdom tooth/teeth....

Those are the numbering of your teeth.

A root canal is when they drill a hole in your tooth. Take a small wire and twist it in the hole. It will grab hold of the nerve in the tooth and rip it out.
