when i turn on my computer the boot screen (where you can go to setup-F2 or boot menu-F12) then a black screen with light grey letters comes up and says the windows can't load because a file called windows/config or something like that is missing or corrupt. it says i can fix this problem using the original setup CD. i don't hav the CD. is there any way i can fix this without the CD, or can i fix it with another setup CD for the same operating system?

thanx in advance

You should be able to use another recovery CD providing it has the same operating system. Just be careful about device drivers they may be different. However, once you are up and running you can always download any drivers that are wrong.

sorry, no if you have no CD you're out of luck. your config file is missing or corrupted the only way is get genuine windows Cd and reinstall it.

edit to slick: he doesn't have neither windows xp/2000. read question before posting please.

if you have XP home edition SP2 CD then just boot from CD, and let windows do repair. it will copy, confid file into your system.

yes...boot to an XP or 2000 CD and do a "repair" you wont be reinstalling the OS or losing any of your files it simply repairs important files, IE registry and other vital files required to boot...try that and see if it gets you back up and running.
