This may sound trivial but my finger nails are peeling. Badly. Nothing that people have recommended that I have tried is helping. I am using a nail product to glue the peeling down but the old nail is still peeling off and it is continuing to start "new" peels. Some of the nails have peeled half way down and are very sensitive. What is causing this and is there a medical treatment (not an OTC nail product) that can help me get it to stop? In other words I don't want to treat the symptoms, I want to stop it from happening!

After a little research I have found some of the reasons might be fungal, viral, microbial, substance abuse, Medications, sickness, aging, and stress. There are Rx's you can get from a dermatologist: creams, nail products, and oral meds. Best of luck, I learned a lot!

You could have a thyroid problem or lack of B vitamins, and as such you should really make an appointment with a doctor to rule both out. However, if you use a lot of hand sanitizers, that could also be the culprit. Frequent handwashing is extremely important to prevent disease, but you should use regular, not antibacterial soap because it may be the alcohol in the antibiotic products which are thinning your nails.

Treat the symptoms. Hmmm. Are you using alcohol based hand cleanser frequently? That stuff really wrecks my nails, but I have to use it frequently at work.

The only thing I can say is to buy a nail strengthener polish. It is clear. And I hear it helps.
