Awesome question. I have wondered that for years. You are not even near getting what you pay for. Yes there has to be air to keep them from being crushed but they should not be taking that much abuse during shipping.

Bags are larger than they need to be and puffed up so the bags don't collapse and crush the chips.

Try it with a ziploc bag... place some chips in a ziploc and suck out the air. In another bag, place some chips in a bag and blow in some air. Try crushing the bag.

You'll see the puffed up ziploc protects the chips better for handling and transportation.

people are stupid they see a big bag and buy it as it must have more, they do the same trick with bottle design making them taller and skinner
