B&W is not a photographic style. Casual, romantic, pastoral, photojournalistic, surreal, high contrast, low key, high key, formal, editorial and environmental are styles.
B&W is a medium and you can use it with pretty much any of the styles.
Antoni pretty much laid out the basic consideration for shooting B&W and that is form and texture. The graphic qualities of the subject are the primary concern.
If you are shooting digital then you have an advantage over film because most software that converts from color to black does so using 'perceptual luminance.' That means that colors will render in shades of gray that are similar in lightness or darkness of tone to how we see the brightness of colors. Film is different and has a color response that means that some colors which look radically different to the eye will turn out almost the same shade of gray on film. This is another good reason to concentrate on form and texture in B&W.
The key, and this holds for all photography, is how your subject is lit. Form and texture are best revealed when the subject is lit by light coming at an angle, so you probably don't want the light coming straight on.
Hope that helps.

The gospel according to Joel Meyerowitz. If photos are meant to describe something more clearly than can be describe in words then color gives you more description than black and white. You lose 99% of the spectrum of light. However sometimes black and white is called for. It can be the case that the contrasts between positive and negative space can only be properly described in black and white. So all of that is just to say it's up to you. Sometimes it only works in BW and sometimes it only works in color. The rest is a personal opinion. I've seen guys who upload everything in both just because they can't decide.

The very same subjects that work in color, but, they will work in very different way.
Think about a colorful subject, such as a circus scene, with clowns, big top and colorfully attired acrobats. A color photo, shown side by side with a black and white image may show the same scent, but tell very different stories. It is up to you, the photographer to capture the image in a way that tells the story the way you want to say it. Remember that, where color is used, in one medium, to differentiate objects, in black and white, contrast is much more important.
Remember that photograph existed for a hundred years before color film was invented. Photographers did not decide to skip taking a shot because he lacked color film.
Is there not happines and joy in old, black and white movies? Is there not sadness and pathos in color cinema?

Well, almost everything is good for black and white photography ... landscape, people, buildings ...
You just have to make sure you have the right angle, right light (even at night)and sometimes the right filter.

The homeless (ask first, and/or pay them for their photos. I did, and the photos were great.) Sort of a journalistic look into their reality. But don't just snap and run off.
Old abandoned buildings. Children. The elderly (great stuff there, they look fantastic in b/w, full of stories in their eyes.)
