....about the efforts of the New Christian Right to break down the "wall" between church and state? Just to let you know, I am a conservative evangelical Christian, but I am in a minority, as I am a Sabbathkeeping Christian. I am concerned that those who would be my allies today will tomorrow lump me in with all those "godless heathens", when they start enforcing "Blue Laws". Just to give some examples, have you heard of the legal cases "Employment Division v. Smith", "Sherbert v. Verner", "Minversville v. Gobitis" and H.R. 2797? These trends have me concerned about our future. Your thoughts?

Yes, I am very worried.

I do not, however, know what to do about it.

Peace

If government represents the people and the people are religious then laws will inevitably be affected by the peoples' religious sensibilities. A law can either exist or not exist and one's religious perspective on it will result in only one religion being satisfied. As an example, Roe v. Wade illegalized the illegalization of abortion. Naturally this was opposed by the morally sensible (i.e. Christians), but it satisfied the religious sentiments of the morally insensible (i.e. atheists).

The notion of a "wall" is a contrived one that is wielded only when one group wants to override the legitimate laws of another.
