Absolutely explain. We fear most what we don't understand. Make it sound fun and exciting to find out how his eyes work. The biggest issue my kids had with the eye doctor was that they couldn't answer the questions correctly. In other words, they didn't know that it was part of the examination to tell the doctor when the couldn't see something, that they didn't have to "get it right". Good luck!

An evaluation will not hurt. It can tell you either that he is right on track, or will provide you with steps to help him. It is frustrating to hear that someone thinks your baby is not up to par, but dealing with anything now will make life easier in the long run. Your son does sound advanced in some areas, definetly, but other areas should be addressed. Mainly his ears. However, perhaps he just doesn't like the doctor...

Yes you should. The poor boy needs to know what is going on. Its always worse to just show up without them knowing anything. But don't make a big deal of it. Just say "we are going to the eye doctor to see how your eyes are." Most eye doctors are good at explaining what they are doing to kids. The only issue may be if they dilate his eyes.

Yes, you should talk with him about it. Anytime you give someone information about something, it will help them to better cope with it and understand it, than just bringing them in and surprising them. Your child might benefit if you let him go in a little early and talk to the people who work there. Maybe he will get a chance to look over some of the equipment or even see other patients. Just make it seem more like a field trip than a "scary" appointment.

If you don't prepare him he will be more likely to be upset. Explain exactly what will happen, but also let the doctor know before you go about the ADHD.

i really dont see what the big deal is, its a normal test that everyone does. just tell him the doctor wants to see how far away he can see things clearly. he is just testing his eyes, everyone has it done.
