It's a myth that butter on a cat's paws will keep it at home. That's just wishful thinking.
All butter on the paws will do is make a mess when they shake it off, or get it slimed on the furniture.

Some people recommend buttering a new cat's paws to help it settle in - by the time it has licked the butter off it will have calmed down. I've personally never tried it. I just usually introduce them to the house a little at a time as to not overwhelm them.

For making your cat lick it's paws and make a mess of the floor, yes. For just about anything else you have heard to butter your cats paws for, no.

No - they will track it everywhere.
Just keep them in for a bit so they forget the old house.
