Hi! Just so happens I made chili last night...I cooked everything together until it was almost done then I added about 2 Tbs of Masa Flour (much finer than cornmeal) and it gives that TexMex flavor I love...very subtle but yummy...

No, but I do put some corn masa (super finely ground mexican processed cornmeal) in my chili. I usually add it last, in very small amounts at a time.

I start with 1/2 teaspoon for the whole batch, then let it simmer for a few minutes.

Otherwise, to thicken chili, I often put pinto beans in a blender and add the puree to the chili.

No!

You can add some masa (1/4 cup maybe) about 10 minutes before you remove it from the heat. This will slightly thicken the chili. Masa is included in that chili fixens kit sold in the small paper bag in the grocery store (don't remember the name of it).

Masa is more like a flour vs corn meal.

I have, but I don't normally.

It's a thickener and should be added at the end. Stir it in a little cold water before adding to prevent lumps

Having tried it both with the cornmeal and without, i personally like my chili without (does not change the flavor much just makes it thicker)

No, I don't we prefer to have corn bread with our chili not in it.

I prefer mine to be cornbread... instead of cornmeal, but it achieves the same basic effect as plain cornmeal.
