Matthew 5:29
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

-This of course is an analogy of things in our lives that cause us to sin- God is simply stating that whatever is causing us to sin we need to GET RID OF it! Throw it out of our lives! I agree completely and now that I have been pondering this verse today I want to pray for God to reveal any sin in my life, that is caused by something in my daily life I need to get rid of. Do you notice this in your own life? Is there anything in your life that is causing you to continually sin?

Matthew 5:30
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

-For the person who said he thought the verse concerning our eye meant spiritual sight-- the analogy goes on to explain if it be our hand, to cut it off--- still remaining that ANY thing in our lives that is causing us to continually sin we must CUT IT OFF, get rid of it, cut it out of our lives.

The Bible is written in parables, and much of it is SPIRITUAL and much of it is LITERAL. It is both! The word of God is powerful and alive and active as Hebrews 4 says. We need to pray for WISDOM from the Holy Spirit when understanding the scriptures, but never to lean on our own understanding just as Proverbs 3:5-6 says.

Well, I really think that they could have come up with a better analogy. Really, think about all the mentally ill people who could gouge out their eyes after reading this. It's no different than Ozzy-assisted suicides.

But back on topic - sort of. I don't believe in god or sin in the same sense you do, but I simply try to remove all negativity from my life. For instance, I used to read books that didn't have happy endings. I ended up tossing all of them, even though they were good books, because I realized how much they actually affected me. Who needs that?

Thanks Mibandibee for this important question.Yes there are many hindrances.Yes too much tv and as one honest Brother said, the Internet.
I don't want to take personally, or on board people who I know are not on my side and rise up in anger or unjust thoughts.
This question's reminding me to come to the Lord to make me the person He wants to make me.
Yes It's good also that you understand that the bible is made up of parables and literally too.Quite a few people need teaching on this and need to ask God for the Spirit of Revelation before reading.
As i read the Lord through His word shows me what offends me and is a hindrance in my life and my walk with Him.

May I add that this parable is for the whole Body of Christ and it's tiring when Christians are being attacked.Whatever Denomination we are should not matter if we're believing in the Father, son and Holy Ghost and baptised.
I think there needs to be alot of 'plucking out' of critical, judgemental attitudes.

After a couple mis steps I could not read your question, in that case.

There is a better solution. Repent and ask God for forgiveness.

The bold statement by Jesus is a spiritual truth, not a physical suggestion:
"If your eye causes you to sin pluck it out". -- Matthew 5:29

See life with Spiritual eyes, not sinful eyes of flesh-lust!

Jesus sacrifice exchange into no longer an open invitation for us to stay a life-time of sin. Jesus exchange into right here telling us that if some thing is making us stumble inflicting us to sin, you'll want to eliminate what's stumbling us so as that we don't sin. in case you recognize which you have a difficulty with eating properly you're actually not likely to maintain liquor on your place. you will possibly eliminate it with a view to no longer sin. only because of the fact we've been born sinners does no longer mean that we are going to no longer administration ourselves and not sin. many human beings understand to no longer commit adultery or homicide or scouse borrow. Why? because of the fact all of us understand that it displeases God. Jesus died so as that if we live obedient to God we'd sometime be loose from sin and loss of existence and have the possibility to stay endlessly.

Jesus had a great way of sharing a truth with some humor! Eyes don't cause us to sin, our sinful hearts do! But in this message, He address the importance of cutting off that which can lead us into sin. I think His point was to cut off what you're lookin' at that tends to lead you into sin.

If I follow you, the bible equates SIN and DEBT together. If George W Bush causes the nation to go into debt and bankruptcy because of the 9 trillion $ deficit for the Iraq War, debt being a sin, then what are you implying by quoting Mt. 5:29 "If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell." Should I paraphrase it and put it this way: "If George W Bush causes the nation to sin, impeach him out and throw him out of office. It is better for you to make him resign as President of the United States than for your whole nation to be thrown into hell"? Is THIS the idea you're trying to say?

Very interesting question. I also pray to God to reveal sin in my life that I need to get rid of. Thanks for the question.

Ummm, people it is obvious the scripture is talking about looking upon someone in lust. Why would God want us to remove our eye?

I always thought that Jesus was saying that it's better to lose a physical thing than lose your soul to hell. Our physical bodies are temporary, but our souls are eternal, it should be the most important thing we guard.

I have always interpreted this scripture to mean we'd be better to lose our physical sight than our spiritual sight. The physical sight is temporal whereas spiritual sight is eternal. yes, it does say what you quoted and again I take that to mean we would be better off losing all of our physical being, than to lose the smallest portion of our spiritual being.
