I would never ever put my dog in this kind of danger. Granted the bear will probably be more scared of your dog than anything else, but why risk it.
But to answer your question: If the bear wanted to pick a fight with your Saint, your Saint would NOT have a chance.
Why isn't this dog inside your house at night? A garage would even be an upgrade at this point.

I would suggest not keeping your dog outside at night. Saint Bernard's aren't known as the most aggressive dog and a bear is quite bigger, especially depending on what kind of bear it is. If a bear wants to, he can easily overpower your Saint Bernard. A dog's natural response is to fight back, but that doesn't mean he won't get severely injured in the process.

As a dog owner, you're responsible for the health & well being of your St. Bernard. Therefore, if you KNOW there are bears that come onto your property, the responsible thing to do, would be to keep your dog indoors during the night.
It doesn't matter if a St. Bernard can ''fend off'' a bear, because what'll happen if there's more than one bear there? Or an angry momma bear that thinks your dog is a threat to her cubs?
St. Bernards aren't ''fighters'', and most likely, you'll have a severely injured, if not dead, St. Bernard in the morning.

Granted, the dog's barking will probably drive the bear away, but why risk it? Never underestimate a hungry bear, especially in the Spring when it wakes up from hibernation.

No. A saint bernard doesn't stand a chance. I'm sorry to say it, but I would keep your dog inside when your not home and at night. Good Luck. And be careful yourself too.

Bears are fearful and wouldn't normally attack a dog. They would rather run away. It is really easy to scare a bear despite popular belief. It depends on how the dog reacts. I would be more worried about wolves. I have a country house and many people have had their dogs killed by wolves and coyotes not bears.
As a general "good dog owner" rule, you don't leave your dog unattended outside.

Don't put your dog in this danger ever. Keep your dog in the house. You don't want your dog to get killed or seriously injured do you?
Bears are some mean animals and can really tear up your dog or kill your dog! Your dog would probably be killed easily by the bear!
Please keep your dog indoors!!!

The way dogs take on a bear is from all sides. So one dog by it's self regardless of breed ain't gonna get er done.

that dog isn't going to want to mess with a bear and a bear isn't going to want to mess with a dog. it is likely that food from humans is all these bears know and why would they waste energy fighting with your dog when they have a whole garbage can full of food? if they were in a fight your dog would loose so take him in at night if your worried.

Due to its size and power, your dog could fight a bear, but DON'T risk and let it happen. St. Bernards are not meant to be aggressive guard dogs and your dog might not be able to defend itself from a bear, although it might try. Please take your dog in during the night.
