DOES ANYONE KNOW IF YOU CAN GET A CHEAPER PRICE ONLINE OR FROM THE DISTRIBUTOR FOR THE ROYAL CANINE

Unfortunately, no there is not. The Royal Canin SO is the best bet for her situation. I know it is expensive, but she needs to be on this food.

We just had a client bring their furkid into the hospital (with a history of bladder stones) who decided she would try a different diet, well, $2,000 later she wishes she just stuck to the food. The poor thing was blocked due to the stones reforming.

Good luck with your girl :)

ADD: Unfortunately, you cannot order the food directly from Royal Canin unless you are a distributor (vet office, food store, pet shop, doggie daycare, etc.).

I would recommend something more holistic and natural. My vet put my dog on Royal Canin, and it turned out to be very bad for her. It is not the best food for your dog's condition. Wellness makes a food called "Simple Solutions". It isn't necessarily cheaper then Royal Canin, but probably better. Not a lot of fillers and grains. Also, after some research I found out Royal Canin had a couple of their foods on the pet food recall list. Look up the two companies online and you'll see a difference. Also, you can buy a supplement called Vetri Science UT Strength For Dogs. You can find both the Wellness food and the Vetri Science at Only Natural Pet Store. You can find a link on my page at:

Animal_a has given you the best advice, join K9KidneyDiet group on yahoo. These folks are knowledgeable and experienced and the Fuzzer diet is successful in dissolving existing stones and preventing the formation of additional stones in dogs that are prone to this. If it were my dog I wouldn't bother with the canned prescription diet. Good luck.

I agree with the first answerer, Vet Tech. You should definitely stick with the food. It may seem expensive, but she is a Pomeranian after all and probably does not eat a whole lot. That little bit of extra money is well worth the problem not coming back. We have a client at my work who had to bring his cat in like, once a month because he kept getting blocked. We would then have to anesthetize the cat, insert a catheter and unblock his urine. We kept telling him over and over "You need to switch the cat's food!!", but he didn't listen to us. Finally after about the 7th time, he listened and he has not had to bring his cat in since he switched to the new food, which was about 6 months ago. I would trust my vet's recommendations.

Join the K9KidneyDiet group on Yahoo! They have many resources regarding different types of kidney and bladder stones.

You need to know which TYPE of stone the dog has in order to deal with it.

I rescued a dog with calcium oxylate bladder stones, his new owners have successfully treated him using the Fuzzer Diet... which is formulated for calcium oxylate stones.

Edit: brina: the advice you've given to add rice to the diet could be exactly OPPOSITE of what is needed depending on the type of stone forming. Please do not give this sort of medical advice when it could, literally, cost the life of the dog.

Maybe you can compare the ingredients in the dog food, with the ingredients in some cheaper dog foods and if they are the same, you can talk it over with your dogs surgeon, to see if it would be o.k. to change! But, I would definitely stick to what the doctor told you to do, until he tells you it is o.k. to do something different!! Good Luck, I am so glad your little baby is o.k.!!!!!!

stick with this. these kinds of diets are expensive, but science diet is likely the only other possible alternative and it will cost roughly the same.

sure glad your dog is better.

i would stick with the food they recommeded to you. However I would make up some rice, and fried up drained lean ground beef, mixed together, put aside in the fridge and mix it in with the food. Should make the food last longer and your dog will love it. They also say to make that mix if your dog is sick as it is easy on the stomach.
