Well, there are a few people like MLK Jr. and Gandhi. Then you get some like Torquemada and Jim Jones.
The good side of religion is the side that teaches us to be good to one another. The evil side of religion is the side that teaches us:
-anybody who's different is evil and it's okay to hurt/kill them;
-normal sexual urges are evil (unless you're married to someone you don't really want to sleep with and willing to have a baby every year);
-you have to waste time and money on church activities, or else you're evil;
-you are an evil sinner just because you exist, and only believing their mythology will save you from burning in hell for eternity;
-you must check your brain at the door and not question anything that your religious leaders tell you;
-anything that's fun, interesting, or just makes life a little easier is "sinful."
In the balance, I think religion does more harm than good. Maybe if it had never gotten into the hands of powerful people it would have stayed good.

Look at the religious opposition to same sex marriage and the fact that the religious teachings caused people to repress their orientation resulting in a artificial increase of homosexuals.
Martian Luther and Gandhi are easy as most of the actions we know them for were influenced by their religion.

For starters America was founded on religious freedoms. Our forefathers fought and died for our freedom to worship God as individuals.
Read all the early documents written by our founding fathers. With recent celebrations for our veterans we should all be grateful for their sense of patriotism to keep our great country free from terrorism, religious suppression, their willingness to even give their lives for our freedoms that are taken so matter-of-factly by so many now. Many gave their lives that those who bash us for our beliefs can do so without repercussions.
The faith of our forefathers was the basis on which America was built. They firmly believed that the Bible was the final authority governing them. When they gave us the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, The Bill of Rights, etc. They were all based on Biblical principles. They knew a country without God could not stand.
The Bible sets forth moral standards without which people do what's right in their own eyes and if we're honest we know all people are sinners. (Don't say we aren't ... you don't have to teach your children to lie, cheat, steal, etc. ... it comes naturally. You have to teach them NOT to) If I think it's okay to take your car, then who's to stop me? You can see where this kind of thinking will lead. Without God's Word we wouldn't know what sin is and how to deal with it.
Through Biblical principles God has given men the intelligence to make laws to govern ourselves ... speed limits, etc.
I'm sure you get the point ... the Bible influences every aspect our lives. At least those who believe and even those who don't to degrees beyond their control.
As far as MLK,Jr. and Gandhi, I'm sure they were influenced by what their parents taught them and forming their own opinions by what was evident around them.
Here is a site you may want to check out: www.wallbuilders.com and do a search on David Barton and others mentioned on the site. David Barton is an expert on the early development of our country. Good luck with your lesson.

All religions prescribe a set of moral teachings that would prevent us from doing bad things in our daily lives like not to steal, not to kill etc.
Martin luther king was a Christian and he was influenced by his faith that he could achive improvements in the civil rights of African Americans, cause Christianity teaches that faith can move mountains, and indeed he achived his goal.

For myself as a Christian, my religion challenges me to look beyond the action of people to extend forgiveness and aspire to love others like Christ did. You can use MLK as a specific example but as a whole...you can look at black people, who have suffered tremendous persecution from the moment they set foot in America. Their deep religious beliefs are unequivocally tied to their identification with being the poor and meek whom Jesus loves. My father, a diehard atheists says that after all black people have been put through, you'd think they would have gone postal on white america but they have actually showed themselves to be some of the most docile people on the planet. They commit greater harm amongst themselves than against anyone else. You can buy that or not, its just his opinion, but as a whole, religion, for those of us who are serious about it, shapes our daily lives in that we choose to give holy....or at the very least, aspire to.
