I'm about to adopt a 2 y/o female schnauzer and I'd like to find some good relationship forming games to play with her. Also, any other tips on adopting a "pre-owned" (for lack of a better word) pup are very welcome! Thanks!!

The best games to play are actually training exercises! You will need to discover what if anything she has already learnt anyway and all training should be a game to the dog. With a new dog that age the one game I would advise against is tug of war! You need to establish a relationship first and also need to know that you can win the game! If she's stronger and most dogs are in this game then every time she wins she learns she's stronger than you and it's a subtle challenge to your role as leader. Just take things easy at first as far as playing, one you need to let her settle and two your love and companionship are enough to build up her trust in you. Play fighting with anyone like tug of war should be discouraged at first too and for the same reasons. work on the basics and see that she knows and will obey, sit, down, stay, come etc. This will also help her to bond with you and at first treats are best given. (If you are feeding dry food take it out of her daily meal allowance so that she's not getting over-fed)
Remember that coming to your home will be traumatic for her and be gentle. Don't shout or raise your voice and don't let people over-whelm her with attention. It's a strange new world for her and she may need reassurance but it must be done in a calm way. Introduce her to where you want her to sleep and let her go there if she wants. When she does don't let others bother her too much. If you need any help feel free to EMail me. Believe me when I say been there got the T-shirt, in fact I've got lots of T-shirts!
Good on you for adopting her!

The absolutely, positively best way to build a bond with an older dog is obedience training. It teaches both of you what to expect from each other and how to peacefully coexist. (lol)

Obedience training works on levels difficult to describe. May I suggest a great book. The Koehler Method of Dog Training by William R. Koehler. If you can't find this book at your pet store, go online to Amazon or even Ebay...but GET that book.
They even have a web site: www.koehlerdogtraining.com
Check it out, they may be able to refer you to a Koehler training class in your area.

Obedience training and KMODT, the best gift you could give your new dog and yourself! Good luck.

I adopted my chihuahua (he was 1 1/2 at the time). He's 2 yrs old in a few days. Just spend lots of time, go to the park together, and for adopting a preowned pet.. You might have to potty train it. For my chi I didn't have to. And if you have other pets make sure they get along, if they don't, don't take the first dog out because they were there before the other dog. But of course love both equially. = ]

you can make a game out of basic obedience work and you can use every opportunity you interact with her to train her. this will build a stronger foundation for your relationship than just playing games with her at this point. when you have a solid obedience foundation, you can introduce fun games that use basic commands (e.g. hide and seek). enroll her in a basic obedience class and go with her to class. even if she already knows commands, it's important for you to work with her so she knows that you two are speaking the same language. have fun.

just remember you are the leader, dogs are pack animals, small dogs tend to rule their masters then the owner complains they cannot control the dog,

you need to set up quickly that you are the leader, I do this by laying on top of the dog until it stops moving, ( no not dead ) and then I let it up and do it again, this is their way of submitting to you , by lying still,

fetch is a good play time, but they need to be walked every day, and controlled, never use a long leash until you have walked it and established you are the pack leader,

Get some tennis balls, and start teaching your dog to bring the ball back to you and do not forget the praise when your dog brings the ball back, go to the pet store and see what they have in the way of pet toys.

Just play fetch with her, cuddle with her, show her how much you love her and she will return the favor. Teach her tricks and reward her with a treat and a rub on the head when she does it right. Maybe even roll around on the floor with her. Just be as playful as she is and have fun. Good luck!
