I usually use 3" Federal Premium Vital Shok 00 copper plated lead.
For slugs, I like 3" 1oz Federal Premium Vital Shok Barnes Expander Sabot.
Try and find some 000 buck eight pellet rounds. These group better at distance because the pellets are lined up perfectly in the shell.

I have found the 3", 15-pellet 00-buck in any premium buffered, copper- or nickel-plated load patterns well thru just about any gun or barrel I've used.
In 2 3/4" the 8-pellet 000 seems more consistent than the 9-pellet 00; sometimes I will alternate 000 with the 12-pellet short-mag 00 in the tube.
Actually the #1-buck in 16, 20, and 24-pellet loads throws excellent patterns through most any choke, but the pellet is a bit light for deer, and is perhaps better employed for close defence.
I have come to prefer Winchester buckshot as the one brand which shoots consistently and predictably thru all my guns, at least in the loads just mentioned.

My 870 seems to like Remington Express 00 Buckshot and Sellier & Bellot 00 Buckshot. Of these two, I prefer the S&B stuff. It has a shorter wadding so it has 12 pellets instead of 9 like the Remington stuff.

It does not matter what everybody preferred brand is. What does matter is what your shot gun likes. The way they teach to pattern your gun in law enforcement is to buy different brands and try them out. The 00 buck 9 pellet is the most effective. The way you pattern is to shoot at a paper target at 50 yards and find the one that has the most pellets centered. You want a target large enough though like poster board or a 3'x3' peace of card board.
Hope this answers your Q. And your right. It does kill!!!

Federal Premium, Remington, Hornady, and Winchester all make great buck-shots and slug rounds.
I use Federal Premium the most
I find that the Winchester rounds jam up in my older model Mosberg, but only that shot gun. My newer model Mosberg they work fine
