I want to open my own business one day but I keep getting constantly reminded that owning a restaurant will consume your life. I only want to open a small cafe', a place where people can just hang out and of course spend money.
Opening my own place is one of my biggest dreams but I'd much rather have a family and be able to spend time with them than operating something that could consume my life and destroy my marriage.

Will a small cafe really do this to me?

Good answers but here's some extra info.
My projected monthly revenue will be between 35-50 in the area im intending on opening it. I have talked to every (EVERY) small business in this town in the past year. My wife loves the idea but I refuse to have any of my family do front of the hosue work. I have no problem with my children learning how the kitchen works but I dont want them to wait tables.

And nobody is nagging me about money. I work in a hotel and make a very nice living, money is no object, and to this day refuse to let it consume me.

I hope to get a few more clearer responses...

Owning A Restaurant

It may be tough in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, with staffing and such, it will be no problem. It's actually a good idea to help provide for your family, and a little bit of sacrifice is necessary these days in order to make a living. Your wife may not be too comfortable with it at first, but in the end, it will all be worth it.

Speaking of which, if your wife nagging you about spending more time with her is one of the biggest concerns, why don't you employ her? She can be a hostess, cashier, take charge of the catering, or, if she's had any experience in office management, she can handle the business side of the cafe (accountancy, communications, etc.) This would be a great opportunity for the two of you to bond together, and if you have children, they may express interest in working there when they get older.

So go ahead and pursue your dream. If you're able to make this a family affair later on, it will be a dream come true.

A small cafe that serves breakfast and lunch and closes around 2 or 3 pm will not be as time consuming as a restaurant that stays open until 9 or 10 or later if you serve booze.
If that's a dream you will be happy and you could include you family to help you, and put a little cash in there pocket as well.
But you will be tied down to the business. I know small cafe owners that have no problem with there lives(as well as full double time restaurant owners).

I was in the restaurant business most of my life. It would depend how many hours you keep it open a day and how good and trustworthy a staff you have. Any business especially when you first start out is time consuming. There are always problems that crop up that only you can handle. If you want to put in your 8 or 10 hours and forget it don't open your own business.

Well think of it this way, if you own your own resturant you become your own boss, and you have to make some sacrifices and follow your dream, it'll pay off, worked for me and now i'm pretty much set for life, but go for it and don't let people tell you things like that mostly because they don't wanna see you happy and succesful, never listen to anyone but your self when it comes to completeing a life goal - there are lots of envious and jealous people out there that would tell you otherwise - if i listend to what people had to say about me starting my own buisness, i don't know where i'd be right now - but me being my own boss couldnt get any better than it is now

My family owned restaurants as I was growing up. I can tell you that you are never "off duty." Even if you have a manager, they most likely won't care as much as you and might not run the place the way you want them to. And obviously it's very important to be able to trust them.

Owning your own business will definitely take away some of your freedom.

Good luck following your dream and making this difficult decision.

I have worked in restaurants and yes it can be murder on your family life. A small cafe may work for you. Is your family participating or not? Remember that any business you own and operate is usually a 7 day a week job. Think about cleaning, purchasing, payroll and tax prep and other activities you have when the cafe is closed.

If you are ambitious yes - you have to pay uniform business rate, wages, employers national ins. contributions, gas electric, your own salary, rent, tax and the tax on any profit you may make. You will also have to pay for cover for any maternity leave (double that salary and with holidays), fire extinguisher checks, insurance for the premises, loss of income and so many other things which are regarded as entitlements by a prospective employee. If i was you i would just forget it, but then i have just retired as a director and employer of 62 people. Your life will never be your own again.

It all depends upon you. It will be difficult and very time consuming in the beginning. It depends how well you juggle your time and prioritize as well as how support your wife and family are.
Lots of people have successful businesses and families. It can work.
