I'm talking about in regards to excercise, because I am lifting weights to get my upper body pumped for the Army, but I'm not sure whether to consume the protein before or after, or before and after keeping in mind that I'm not rich to buy all these special protein bars time and time again. Also, meat protein, or soy protein?

pre-workout you want to consume a carb (orange, whole grain toast, etc), so during your workout your body burning those carbs and not muscle. post workout, you want a protein within an hour of your workout. If you aren't rich, you can eat a lean meat such as turkey or chicken

Best thing to have after a work out is fruit followed by or with meat within an hour of the last part of the work. Soy protein is ok for the short term but meat is more effective.

The age old question of when to consume protein will always be highly debated as individuals produce different results. As you know, what may work for one may not be as receptive to another. That you are in fact consuming protein is most important. Individual routines, level of intensity in their workouts, types of work outs and of course, body metabolism can offer varied results as well.

As you are training for the military, you should know that with your intake of protein before your enlistment begins, once you enter boot camp, chances are that you will not be able to consume protein during boot camp. Your muscles will hunger for the protein you are accustomed to feeding them and you will endure some muscle atrophy.

However, once you have completed boot camp, you can once again begin consuming protein and should see a resurgence in muscle growth and of course, strength.

I would consume the protein shortly before a workout because most body builders dont have time to wait for amino acids if they want to get bigger. I would recommend Hardcore Strength Whey Protein as it is loaded with clinically proven muscle building accelerants to instantly boost your blood amino acid levels and sends protein directly to your muscles.

Regardless of what you decide, exercise and the consumption of protein suggests you are already on your way to a desired level of mass and strength. Good luck and best wishes as your military career begins.
