No. There are plenty of times you don't need to signal, but writing up all these exceptions would be too much for people to absorb, so it is just simpler to say that you should signal every time. A driver behind you doesn't need to know which way you are turning although it is good to signal to give warning that you are slowing down. Its his job not to run into you in any case. Similarly a car approaching you doesn't need to know you are turning right. You should signal a left turn in this situation in case the approaching car is speeding.
At four way stops, I find that turning my wheels slighltly signal my intentions quite well. I always think its funny to see a long line of cars signalling even if there is a turning lane and everybody knows where they are going anyway. Click-click-click-click......I hate that sound.

Yes. That would be like saying if there was no one waiting, would you have to stop at the red light... or if there's no one on the sidewalk, why can't you drive on it.

If you're a good driver, you're in the habit of using a turn signal, and it's not even something you really think about.

I've been driving a long time, and I always use it -- even if there's no one else there, and even if you can ONLY got a certain way. People even laugh at me!

But I have a good reason. If I always use it, then I do it by reflex, which means that I never, ever forget to use it when i need it. I just do it automatically now, and that's one thing I never have to think about or worry about when I drive. I know the person behind me always knows what I'm going to do next, and I think that makes us all safer.

I just do it automatically which really is best as some speeding nutter can come from nowhere . I really don't know if its law that you have to but to keep good driving habits then just do it. Also please switch off your indicators whilst stationary as long as the person behind knows which way you are going and put your hand break on at traffic lights instead of blinding the person behind with your break lights . Any of these familiar . Its just that so many youngsters don't know the polite rules of the road . I am not saying you don't but if anyone else is reading this i hope they take note

If the law requirs it, in your state, then, yes, it is necessary. It is like the often repeated question on this forum where a driver questions the need to obey speed limits if there is no other traffic on the road.

The answer is, still, yes.

If the state law requires a signal, then a signal is required.

Yes, you should. although when I was having lessons my instructor said using turn signals when there is no one around is like talking to yourself!

But where I live hardly anyone uses them, which really ticks me off.

Yes, if not for just b/c it's the law. Then it's to keep your habits in tact.
