That would be untrue... we use humor because we are free to do so, and enjoy it!

Take a look at your minister... how truly happy is he?

So it's not just possible that there are some people who are very funny that just don't happen to have an invisible friend?

Does your minister friend actually believe that only Christians are capable of happiness and a sense of humor?

If it weren't for the fact that God needs your money, I'd say he was a little retarded. It sounds to me like he wants you in his church. I'll bet he's invited you to come join in the Sunday festivities already. Keep in mind, faith keeps his belly filled, and all he has to do to stay well fed is keep a room full of people coughing up $15-20 a head every week.

All he has to do to make that happen is trash talk anyone who doesn't share his opinions on the Bible.

All human beings use humor to hide their pain. It's one of the highest defenses of the psyche.

That said, I don't think atheists are necessarily sad. I can speak only for myself, and I'm pretty happy. =]

What pain? Being an atheist is not painful. I don't believe in a mythical fairy tale supernatural being...no pain there. If atheists were so sad and empty, then wouldn't they turn to deceiving themselves with religion rather than humor. It works so well for the chritians to hide their own inadequecies behind the fairy tales of their religious cult.

I thought atheists joked around because they knew their opposition wasn't listening to a word they said and they figured they could at least recover some humor from the situation.

I sure am using humour to hide my deep, intensive pain that I have no higher power in my life. God, the pain is so, so bad but...at least making others laugh doesn't let them know I'm DYING inside.

Do all minister's have such a deep understanding of Atheism? I mean, really, he got me right on.

Here's an idea though, and it's just food for thought: try talking about your Atheism with someone who hasn't devoted their life to the deity you profess disbelief in.

Your minister is seriously undereducated, and not only that, he is presumptuous.I am an atheist, and the only pain I suffer is from arthritis. And anyone is welcome to take it.
Other than that I am very happy, even though I am terminally ill with Emphysema.
State of mind is what you make it. If you are miserable, if you think that way. So goes it with happiness, as well.
I have a very happy life. My children and grandchildren are close to me, and we have fun every day. I make every day count, as they are dwindeling down, so they are all precious to me.

A lot of people use humor to mask uncomfortable feelings. Some people are just funny.

What evidence does the pastor have to back this up? He is just scared that someone is capable of not falling for the religion thing. He is just trying his best to make it seem like the atheists are suffering for it.
