i think its certain.... that they will try... god says there will be a time where the government will turn against 'false' religion and try to wipe it from the earth. this is what we call armagedon.
Picture the scene. A harlot is sitting on the back of a fearsome beast. The beast has seven heads and ten horns. (Revelation 17:1-4) Whom does the harlot represent? She exerts influence “over the kings of the earth.” She dresses in purple, uses incense, and is exceedingly wealthy. In addition, by means of her spiritistic practice, ‘all the nations are misled.’ (Revelation 17:18; 18:12, 13, 23) The Bible helps us to see that this harlot is a worldwide religious entity. She depicts, not any one religion, but all religions that produce rotten fruit.
The beast that the harlot rides pictures the world’s political powers.* (Revelation 17:10-13) False religion straddles the back of this political beast, attempting to influence its decisions and to control its direction.
Soon, though, an amazing event will take place. “The ten horns that you saw, and the wild beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her devastated and naked, and will eat up her fleshy parts and will completely burn her with fire.” (Revelation 17:16) In a sudden, shocking move, the world’s political powers will turn on false religion and completely destroy her! What will prompt this action? The Bible book of Revelation answers: “God put it into their hearts to carry out his thought.” (Revelation 17:17) Yes, God will call false religion to account for all the despicable acts she has committed in his name. In a stroke of perfect justice, he will use her political paramours as his instrument of execution.
What must you do if you do not want to share the fate of false religion? “Get out of her, my people,” urges God’s messenger. (Revelation 18:4) Indeed, now is the time to flee from false religion! But to where can you flee? Not into atheism, since its future is also bleak. (2 Thessalonians 1:6-9) The only haven is within true religion. How can you identify true religion?

The US government is not trying to abolish religion.
Come on. Give one example of the US government trying to abolish religion.
Will the government ever abolish it? I do not believe so. I hope the government keeps up with not forcing people to observe the religion of others though.

Religion and government is part of the same machinery. People are willing to die for religion. Religious people make up a large percentage of the military and those that support military intervention abroad (ironicly?). If we abolish government FIRST it would be much easier to abolish religion, but it won't happen the other way around.

I like to think that a government does not have supreme control either of my body, or my mind.
1984 came and went, but now, a little late, we seem to be drifting in that direction.
I don't know which government you mean, but in the UK it would be tantamount to a revolution. The Monarch is, after all, the Head of State AND the Head of the Church.
No one can abolish an individual's beliefs.
It didn't work in the Soviet Union. Within a few months of the collapse, the Russian Orthodox was up and running again.

I hope not. It would not be a good idea. I am an atheist, but I still believe in freedom of thought. I would like to see an end to religion through the process of people thinking and debating it and realizing that it is unnecessary and harmful, not through a tyrannical government forcing people to think a certain way.
That is the difference between your average atheist and communists, by the way. From previous questions, there seems to be some confusion.

The USA is certainly trying to abolish every religion except Christianity. No it wouldn't be a good idea and I would keep practicing Islam if it was ever outlawed in the USA.

I believe the government will. It might be awhile. Our religious freedoms are being eroded away which is abolishment by default. America wants to be the land of the tolerant. How much more tolerant can one get if they're not allow to practice (openly) what they hold most dear?
No, I don't think it's a good idea, even if I disagree with your worldview.

No, and what purpose would it solve?
Why SHOULD they take that away from someone? What would it solve?
Honestly- the government should REJECT religion in its own entity to keep things fair for other religious or nonreligious folks, but abolish? No. That would be unfair all around. One of the nice things about this country is that you don't get hanged for being the wrong religion. Why should you get hanged for being ANY religion?
I'm lovin' it.

No they wouldn't because they would be voted out and replaced with pro religious politicians.
It's better that people learn through experience than to take it away from them. If you take alcohol away from an alcoholic will it cure them or will they simply buy some more?
Who are they to abolish religion? Where would it stop?
I don't like religion but I wouldn't take it away from them the same way as I wouldn't pull the crutches from under a cripple - they are better off with rehabilitation.

That is prophesied to happen in the Bible, that the governments will turn on religion as a whole, you can read it in Revelation chapter 17, God will put it in world leaders' hearts to abolish religion, and then...

I doubt the government would ever abolish religion, there'd be mass outrage, plus sometimes religion can be used to do good. It's not all about terrorists, extreme Christians etc. :)
