Solidarity Tax.

This is uniquely German and was a tax added to the income tax and corporate tax to cover the costs of the reunification in 1990. It's currently 5.5% of income and corporate tax.

Germany was parted for more than 40 years. The parts were called East-Germany and West-Germany. The eastern part was very poor and under social Government. When Germany get reunited 18 years ago the richer part of West-Germany had to pay for the poorer part of East-Germany to build up a better economy, building new streets and motorways... on and on and on.
Well, the west part still pays.......... and that's called Solidaritätszuschlag = Solidaritiy surcharge of income tax.

sorry - that's a very very short version of this part of German's history. Would go too far to explain all.
