I need to address the Basenji answers you are getting. I own 3 basenjis, and for me there is no other breed but PLEASE for the sake of the dog, find out what it means to own a basenji, they are a primative breed and live by their instincts. They require a HUGE amount of patience and work. And while they do not bark, they can be noisy, particularly the screeming and the yodeling.
Barking can be trained out of a dog, but if you are not home a lot, who will be training the dog, maybe another pet would work better for you.

I think the better question would be which ones ARE known. That list is so much smaller.
But you have to teach a dog certain things. I think that at least one round of training is a good idea. You will at least learn how to train him.
just an FYI....when dogs are left in small apartments for long periods of time, they can get destructive. They get bored very easily. It's best if you have at least a small yard, or you take it out for walks often.

And dog with the name "terrier" attached to it will bark and bark and bark and bark. And miniature dachsunds are bad, too. At least my next door neighbor's are!! Get a lab - they don't bark much. Or go to the pound and see which dogs are not barking as you walk by.....

Basenjis are adorable and usually never bark. If they do, it's only one short bark and they don't continue. Also, their bark is not like other dogs', it sounds very different.

You would want to get a Basenji...they are known as the African "barkless" dog. You can go to http://www.puppydogweb.com/caninebreeds/basenji.htm
and read all about them there.
You can also read about all the different breeds of dogs and really choose one you think will work best on www.puppydogweb.com and look at the dog breed profiles.

Well, don't get a Basenji. They may be barkless but damn are they noisy!

I hear Greyhounds do exceptionally well in apartments, as long as they are given the proper amount of exercise and socialization. Try going to www.petfinder.com and searching for a local ex-racer greyhound to adopt. There are plenty!

you have to teach a dog not to bark.....dogs tend to pick up barking cuz they are bored....like leaving a dog in a kennel for long hours every day wouldnt help train the dog not to bark.....when the dog barks for nothing you have to correct him....tell him no and give him a toy to play with.......
