I would say it was the externship, but that it was not paid. Then, I would say tell them about the last paid job you had.

A lot of this isn't black and white. Remember that, above else, interviews are conversations and should flow like conversation.

Prospective Employer: Tell me about your last job.

Interviewee: Well, I recently had an externship with XYZ where I did ABC. It was not a paid externship, however. My last job with compensation was with EFG and I was a HIJ.

I think that you're getting hung up on details that aren't difficult to explain. Don't psyche yourself out like that.

Go for the externship and include what you accomplished for your non-paying employer. Then add some details about what you did at the prior paying job. It would be something like, " I made them $1000 per hour, increased customer by 10 fold and enjoyed the work. This was along the lines of the prior position where I increased profits by 300 percent."
Or you can keep in mind that the interviewer doesn't know that it is a non-paying externship until you tell them.

It depends on how long the externship was. I would definitely mention it!! You cn also highlight why you took it, in terms of the new skills you learned and how selective they were in choosing people for the externship.

If the internship relates to the position that you are interviewing for and is the most recent job that you've had I would say that that was my last job.
