I don't know about you but when I order online the products come with a ton of packaging. I plan on shopping in one area. I hit as many shops and buy as much as I can from that area. The key is planning. Know what you want to buy for people and then figure out where to get those items. Purchasing online is double duty on shipping costs. The person you are purchasing from already had those items shipped to them. Now if you purchase something you are paying for yet another shipping. Most of the time product is shipped by truck and/or plane. Creating yet more carbon emmissions!
Now, you bought the presents how are you going to gift wrap? Gift Wrap is very wasteful!

Use LED's In Christmas Lights. Buy A Real Tree From A Company Which Plants Another Sapling when They Cut Yours Down. ( Real Trees Decompose Naturally Where As Plastic Trees, Whilst They Last Longer Will Never Naturally Rot), Use Paper Wrapping Paper Which Is Not Coated In A Plastic Film ( Can Be Recycled ), Recycle All Your Christmas Cards. When Cooking Use Reusable Crockery (No disposable Cooking Trays). If Your Having A Party Put A bin Out Specifically For Glass Bottles ( Beer, Wine etc..) And These Can Be Recycled Afterwards. Use Organic Produce Whenever Possible ( No Fertilisers To Damage Soil And Pollute Water Systems) And Buy Local Produce ( Helps Support Your Local Community And Uses Less Fuels To Transport Them Which Means Lower Carbon Dioxide Emissions ) PS. Where can you buy a whattson? MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR !

On a personal level, buying online is greener than driving to your local town in that it saves on gas, which in turn saves on the amount of exhaust you are putting into the air. However, anything you buy online has to be transported (fuel consumption there) for delivery. Any way you look at it, there is always something that will affect whether it is "green" or not.

I've used the internet here the last couple of years to buy many things online and I never used to shop online. I'd rather pay a couple of dollars for shipping than more than three dollars a gallon for driving into town. Don't have to worry about the traffic, rude people, standing in line, crappy customer service, etc. It sure makes the holidays more enjoyable. Just make sure it's a website you trust if you're going to give out your credit card info. I use my debit card, cause I only keep a certain amount in my checking account. Every three to six months, I destroy my debit card and order a new one, for obvious reasons.
I would recommend buying clothes (especially for kids) online only if you've bought clothes from that same store in the past. Each place (and brand) seems to differ in their sizes and you could very well end up with clothes that don't fit.

Saving money generally translates into less energy use.
Buying online, as opposed to a local retailer, probably means the trip from manufacturer to your house is more efficient. The online retailers sometimes ship directly from the manufacturerer or one of their distributors. You will also save on local sales taxes, and therefore keep more of your money out of the government's hands--which is, of course, a good thing.

It really isn't much different. Either way, it was stored somewhere, and traveled to you either by your car, or by delivery. You could argue that going and getting it yourself is greener, because your car will pollute less than the big truck they are going to use to bring it to you if it goes by ups or fedex.

NO because most likely the warehouse you are buying from is 3,000 miles away so it would take planes, big rigs and delivery trucks to get the item to you. More fuel is probably wasted when you shop online..not county the warehouse energy cost that the item came from.
Just go get it yourself
