It is not hard to find the recipe on line. jimihend has provided you with what seems to be a pretty close apprixmation to what I have seen published. It is not hard to find the components and it is not hard to mix them as long as you don't have to grind them. They can be set off by grinding and can even be set off by being physically struck hard enough. You can find yourself the victim of an unplanned explosion. The powder that you will get is what is called serpentine powder. The three components are not combined in a way that will keep them mixed in the proper proportions. As the powder is jiggled in transet, it will separate due to the difference in the densities of each of the components. When you load this stuff, one time it will go bang, the next time it may go foof and the next time it may go KA_BOOM!!!

So now what do you do wiht this info.? If you are smart you will see that the best and safest thing to do is to go and buy some commercially made black powder at a store. If you are sufficiently curious and don't mind suffering some bad burns, and having limbs blown off or being blinded or killed, you will go try to make some for yourself but have the decency to do it far from anyone else. If you are monumentally stupid, you will try to make it in your house and endanger everyone in there as well as taking a chance on burning down your house or blowing it up. Soccer&b said that homemade blackpowder is awsome. If by awsome, he means hazardous as hell then, yes, it is awsome. It ain't a toy!! Leave the manufacture of black powder up to the professionals.

Go ahead and make it. Use it as a fuse or to start a fire.

But DO NOT use it in a gun. You run the risk of blowing the gun up, getting a ball jammed in the barrel and rusting the gun action and barrel to bits.

You also run the risk of getting in trouble with the law for illegal production of explosives.

I suggest you just buy what you need or use Pyrodex.

1 part STUPID
2 parts DUMB
= 3 parts DEAD.

You can make it but do not use it in any firearm. I would check local laws as true black powder is an explosive and controled as such. So t manufacture it without lic. might land you in jail when one of your buddies blows his arm off with it.
