So im wanting to hook my PS3 up online, I have Cable, and obviously a PS3, and am going to get a wireless router soon, my question is what all else do I need to make this work..

my next question being what particular kind of router do i need for decent performance without breaking the bank?

Most of the PS3 models have Wi-fi built into it, and also an Ethernet port in the back so to go online with a PS3 you will need just the wireless router or a ethernet cord going to the PS3. In other words you are already have all the neccesary components.

Wi-fi is built-in to the PS3 so all you really need is a modem/router capable of producing a wi-fi signal. Sign up for an account on the PSN and you're set.
