my little chihuahua maltese mix just got her stitches out on her head. she still has a bit of a scab on her head and i forgot to ask the vet if she still needs the collar on to prevent her from scratching.
i will call them in the morning as they are closed for the night but i was just curious! what do you all think? would it be ok for her to sleep without this thing again? or could she scratch open her wound again? thanks

To help cut down on the scab pulling the skin, help ward off infection, and to promote healing, I'd use TAO (triple antibiotic ointment) on it. You can find low-cost generics at all pharmacies and most grocery stores. (An example is cited below.)

Keep an eye on the incision site for signs of scratching, unusual redness (infection), swelling (infection), or anything else unusual.

Good luck!

If the sutures are out she should be totally healed, however I would advise you to keep an eye on her just in case. She probably won't open the wound again, but she can cause damage to the skin that can become infected as well if she scratches at the scabs a lot. If you see her scratching, put the e-collar back on until the scabs are gone. If she leaves it alone, she's cured! :)

I would keep one on hand just in case she decides to paw at it. Also, keep some bag balm around. That stuff is a staple in my house, and the antiseptic properties help releive the itching and promotes healing. (and it won't hurt her is she licks it)

Can she reach the area to scratch it? If not, then she doesn't need the collar.
