Dogs travel in cargo thousands of times daily, no problems the majority of the time. I have imported tons of dogs from Europe and have never had a problem with any of them flying cargo. My own dogs have flown more miles than I care to travel and never had an issue either!!

I have a relative that worked for an airline and had horrible stories about pets that were cargo. If you can do not check your pet.. If you Have to. I would make sure it is not the blocked time of year for the airline. It is a small time durning the year, where its not too hot and not too cold. As Far as Tranquilizers some airlines will not let you do this any more it is not safe for the pet. If you can bring them on as luggage for a small dog, my dog has flown and did great, no drugs.

I did not administer tranquilizers. My dog was in cargo from Taiwan to LA and LA to Nashville. If there were ill effects, she didn't tell me about them. I did have to be careful about getting nonstop flights in the summer, since she would not survive a stop in Dallas, where the temps were 100+ on the ground.
That was 11 years ago, and the dog is still alive.

Seattle to St. Louis- never had a single problem with 4 dogs and a cat when we moved. They were moved at different times.
Long time ago, they had problems, but they go to great leangths now to make sure things are good. I've shipped a few puppies with no problem too. Airlines won't do it if there are extremes of weather that would endanger the dog. Your vet must clear your dog healthy to go.

I travedled from Seattle to Philadelphia last year. My dog was in cargo for 4 hour until we transfered in Texas, then in cargo from Texas to Philadelphia,Pa. I was told he was fine. When I landed in Philadelphia, pick him up and he was fine and wanted to go potty. The airlines checked on him on the way. I didnot feed him before flight left. He got feed four hours before flight. He received no tranquillers as its unlawful now on airlines.Hes 25 pounds.I think he slept most of way.

Never have. I doubt that I ever would. I know two people who had dogs nearly die while in cargo.
As far as I am aware, you SHOULD NOT tranquilize dogs going on a plane, and I think airlines have a rule against it. The dog is less able to control it's body temp and can die.
