I just read an article in scientific mind. It was a debate over whether consciousness arises from a cluster of neurons or through the communication of neurons.
It's a complicated idea, I wish I could explain it with more detail.

Consciousness is a result of activity in the human brain.
The brain is always somewhat active, even in deep sleep, but there is a minimum level of activity required for concsiousness. An MRI scan of the brain can usually determine if the subject is conscious or not (of course sometimes the level of measured activity is near the borderline, and so is ambiguous).
There was an article on this in last month's Scientific American.

Consciousness is separate from the human brain. Those who can travel out of body are proof of that.
