Contrast means "to show the differences" "differentiate".
So for instance, when you write an essay on "Life in town and life in the country" you state what are their characteristics, their advantages and disadvantages as against one another. It does not necessarily mean "the opposite", just highlighting the differences. Think of a picture or a photo: in a photo the contrast is important as it helps to see all the shades of colours clearly.

compare means to tell what is similar between the two things and contrast means to tell what is different between the two things.
