How do you know when head lice are really gone?

8 days ago I used Rid lice-killing shampoo on both my kids, used the gel and comb and came up with several adult lice and lots of nits. I did it over and over until I didn't get any more of either. I followed the directions exactly. Following the product's directions, I reshampooed both kids and reapplied the gel and was shocked to find close ten lice in one child's hair, and 5 in the other. But the lice were all quite some and there was not a single nit (but I thought that last time too). Does this mean that I missed some nits a week ago and these are the baby lice recently hatched ? Because I found lice, do I need tocontinue with the every seven days wash with special shampoo/comb out regimen?

Please remember that even though you might be following the instructions precisely as written and you might be killing every single louse on each of your kids' heads, and their pillows, and the carpets and the pets, your kids could still be getting more lice from whatever source they've been getting them.

That's what happened when I was a kid: I had to go through the treatment once a week every week for well more than three months, all because my bratty younger sister was lying about what she was doing in her spare time and playing with some stray but not-quite-ferile cats in a nearby neighborhood, and would wind up getting more lice from them every week and then sharing them with the whole rest of the family.

To answer your question, however, you don't know when lice are really gone. All you ever know is whether you feel their presence due to the itchiness, or whether you see their presence when using a fine toothed comb.

So, the best thing to do is to follow the instructions precisely, and stop using it if you really don't find any more lice or nits, but continue checking on a daily basis for quite some time.

dont listen to the directions double it or triple the amount of times you apply the product, use the comb religiously, and dont stop for about two to three weeks, clean and vacuum the whole house a few times, very important is to wash your pillow and bed sheets, even doing all this you might still find a few survivors just comb these out before they have a chance to colinize again, lice are getting more resistant to these medications so it is getting extremely hard to get rid of them

Repeat 1-2 x per week until you get at least 2 clear results in a row.

Yep, you need to continue the regime. Also, have you changed the sheets, the towels, the pillows and zapped the couch and carpets and run their toys through the washing machine? Do you have any pets? There might still be nit eggs lying around in those places. Also, it's possible that some other kid at school still has them and is sending them home with your kids.

Check the packaging instructions for how frequently you can use it. You must have missed the little pearly eggs on the hair strands, and they hatched. They are extremely hard to see.

If you did not wash every bit of their bed linens and clothing they could have become reinfected. Especially hats and coats, that do not get washed as frequently.
