Any dog with some training!!!

Well it's all relative.
I have a Bulldog and a Komondor and they're fantastic, but I could see them not being for everyone. The bulldog snores like it's his job, is lazy, and has some care things that most people wouldn't want to deal with everyday. The Komondor is HUGE and needs lots of firm training, and getting his coat fully corded is a huge task, not something everyone can deal with.
My parents have 2 coonhounds, they work for them, but again I could see some people not being able to stand them. They do bark/howl and like to try their hardest to escape the yard to go in the woods behind the house.
Some people like little dogs, some people don't, some are very active and need a dog that can live with that lifestyle, others are not willing to deal with a lot of grooming, or don't want to spend lots of money on vet care... For every person there's a dog that fits, that's one of the reason there are so many different breeds.

There are now over 150 seperate dog breeds registered with the American Kennel Club and each one is different in terms of size and temperament, etc, so you'll probably find your best match after a bit of research. I really like the link below because it gives you a sense of what questions are most important to ask yourself before you settle on which breed will fit best with you AND it shows how compatible it thinks you are with each breed.

...personally, though, I have a pekingese mix and a purebred shih tzu and I think they're the best dogs in the whole world :)

That's really one's personal opinion. I love dachshunds (Well, I love any and all dogs), but that doesn't mean you would. I'd have to say the best dog for me would just be an all around good, well behaved, lovable, friendly dog, so that could pretty much be any dog. I'm open to having any breed or mixed breed of dog.

That depends on the person owning the dog.

THe best dog *I* could ever have is a Basset Hound.

The best dog for my mother is a Rat Terrier. I really can't stand terriers..

The best dog for my husband is any small, well behaved, mixed breed dog.

Well, that really depends on your individual preferences and temperament.

Take my best friend, my mother, and myself for example: While I love most breeds; I am a huge fan of Mutts, Mastiffs, and Sight hounds, especially Italian Greyhounds. While my best friend likes some mutts, she hates Sight hounds because of how skinny they are. She prefers breeds like Bulldogs, Boxers, and Pit Bulls. My mother prefers non-shedding terrier-type breeds, like Miniature Schnauzers; where I dislike their looks and I don't like the yappy, tyrant like personalities I have seen in most Miniature Schnauzers. I am sure that there are dogs of that breed that aren't that way, but all the ones I have met are.

Some people like small, quiet, cheery, loyal dogs like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and others like large, dynamic, rambunctious, high-energy breeds like Bouvier Des Flandres.

So in conclusion; it depends on you. What do you like in a dog? What best suits your lifestyle? What doggy 'flaws', like shedding, drooling, barking, etc can you handle, and which just won't work with you?

If you are still left wondering on the subject; you may try a dog breed selector. Here are my two favorites:

I wish you luck, and I sincerely hope this helps!

Rottweilers are the smartest and most well behaved dogs that I have ever found. They have been accused of being mean, but that is because their jack *** owners trained them that way. Best dogs period.

A Lab...they are THE sweetest dogs. I've never met one that didn't have a sweet personality. Plus, they're good with children.

My cousin's lab followed her around the house ALL the freakin' time when she was pregnant with her daughter...we think Catie (the dog) sniffed out the hormones and wanted to protect her. It was the weirdest -- but coolest! -- thing ever.
