It would depend on how the society was functioning. If the society was existing already in relative peace and harmony, I would not find a reason to invent a god... The only reason I could imagine needed to invent a higher power is if there was some appreciable level of strife and suffering that I thought would be eliminated by the advent of a god. However give the historical level of war and suffering that has been caused by people's belief in god, think would have to be pretty bad for me to believe it would make sense.

I would present these people with this version of God. God is the universal spirit, that holds the universe together as one. God's energy is harmonius and constructive. I would tell them if they tune into God, and seek his inspiration and guidance, they will do better in their life, and in the life of their society. The focus of this God would be reality, and continuous reincarnation within a similar reality, would be one of the beliefs. Why, would I put forth such a God? It would act as a spiritual focus point, to hold the society together in unity, and foster a constructive, reality driven emphasis, which should help with society's problems.

You would too. People need something to look for after life if they are good. Without it......everything will go to Hell (no pun). Religion is a way to bring fear into the hearts of evil-hearted people and hope into good-hearted people. Using Religion like this may sound cruel and manipulative but its better than using brute force to control millions of people.........Thats how revolutions start. So yes, creating a God is necessary for any new society.

I would think I'd give it some thought. Not saying the traditional way most thing of GOD. But for some people when their problems become so great, it gives them peace to believe in a higher power to unload their problem too. For example, your family member is going to die from cancer. They have about 2 weeks left. Some people find comfort in saying, it is in God's hands instead of holding on their shoulders 100%.
I would not kill those who would refuse to believe.

If I was living in a time where forensic science was nil and crime was a problem then most definitely. What better way to prevent crime than convince them that their every move is being watched by an invisible sky man ready to punish them eternally for any crime?

HELL NO!!!!!! god doesn't pay the bills, or put food on the table or clean your house or get you a good job or anything that keeps one going in the world. It's only a mental thing, like morals, ethics, motivation etc...

Obviously, it was necessary in the past.
Sometimes I wonder if it's necessary in the present. Obviously, there are always going to be nutters running around that need to be controlled somehow.
As much as I hate to admit it, I might be tempted to do so, just to keep them in line.

Gawd NO!
Conflicting religious beliefs has been the cause of more war and death than the black plague. If my people had the ability to live without it I would do everything I could to support and encourage that independence.

I wouldn't invent one, but I would try to introduce them to Jesus Christ. You would not have to believe in Him in order to live in my country, but everyone would know that I did and would know where to go to find more information about Him.

If I wanted more power than yes, I would, and would appoint myself as the speaker of that god's orders.
