I think it's unethical for teachers, nurses, firefighters, etc to accept such a PERSONAL gift. Their response should be "Thank you, I'm so pleased that you think so well of what we've done. But since we've done it through team efforts, it wouldn't be fair for me to accept this personally. Perhaps you'd like to bring something we could share, like a fruit basket, or make a donation to our charitable Foundation."
The problem is this. If one person makes a gift to such a professional, those who do NOT make such gifts may come to believe that preferential treatment is given to those who DO. That would be a BRIBE. Teachers, nurses, firefighters, etc, are expected to do their best for EVERYONE as a matter of course, not as a matter of getting extra cash on the side.

I feel that the teacher should not accept this type of gift. If a parent or child wants to give a small rememberance that is fine or if the whole class gets together and gets the teacher a gift certificate thats acceptable. It usually is against school policy for teachers to accept expensive gifts from a parent so that nothing is hinted at being inappropriate.

I think that is inappropriate and smacks of bribery. As someone said a class gift or a little keepsake is fine but more than that wouldn't sit right with me. I'd be curious if any of the teacher's refused your friends gift.

That might be illegal as bribery!
It is probably against the school rules to accept expensive gofs from your own students.
